Helmen Vol Verhalen

Searching Military Veterans for my project ReUniForm the foundation Helmen Vol Verhalen crossed my path. After asking the favour if they wanted to share my “Veterans-Wanted” document, in which I explained the meaning of my project, they immediately reached out. As the project is in the same build up phase like my project, the idea was that I would collaborate with them and the end result of my project would travel along with the exhibition they started up.

As Roy Grinwis reached out via another source and I was sure Helmen Vol Verhalen (HVV) would get me a second veteran I was able to confirm to Roy the project was a go. As I told him what the next step would be and that I spoke with Amy van Son of HVV, he told me he knew the project of HVV and send me a video about him and how he did a crowdfund for Ton Kelders and the money ended up Helmen vol Verhalen. As I would also needed to interview Roy about his career, he gave a link to the Kinnebak podcast he did with Kenny van Geijlswijk, which actually was already his whole story and somehow connected to HVV as well,

It somehow showed in fact how small the world of caring about veterans is. Or maybe better pronounced; how there is only a little amount of people and initiatives that are actively involved with the veteran-community to discover new collaborations. Thus it maybe also shows how little amount of civilians understand what the work of defense means to our daily civilian life. And why in fact it also needs to be subsidised as hard felt story's about life and death can be meaningful and is something you can't put a market value on. But not easy to sell doesn't mean that they won't need to be told and/or heard. In fact I always believed these are the stories that we need to subsidize as they are a balancing weight against the Ministry of Defense marketing stories.

With this mindset I started to collaborate and help Helmen Vol Verhalen as well into their journey. The inner drive to bring those story into the public was my force to go even beyond myself. Because as the story of HVV start to develop I kept working for a low paycheck after I graduated, and even after I became homeless shortly after. And to prevent it from getting ugly I needed eventually step-out with the hope the HVV-story continued.

Vliegveld Deelen

Hidden in between the greenery of the Veluwe, lays a airfield that once was build by the Germans during the second World War. Due to the green environment and style of building it looks up from the sky like a regular village and not close to barracks and an airfield. This made it a unique location of a extreme durable quality that the Dutch government decided to make a location belonging to the ministry of Defence. It gives the project Helmen Vol Verhalen the ultimate chance to land in the light in the light of defence and society.

As part of the side program of Helmen Vol Verhalen it means I had to made an exhibition in between all other exposed art. As there were more side-programs, like the Maakplaats, that needed attention I also helped to style that part off the program. As all results of thinking upfront eventually becomes visual I always like this part. Besides it gives the possibility of meeting all other participants, artists and veterans, and learning about their experience in and outside this project.

In the preparation of the first setup, the design of the turn-key exhibition is made in a 3-dimensional design program.

This helps to get a visual image of the image and tackle difficulties upfront. So we step by step evolve in a worthy thought through exhibition.

As we needed places to sit in the amfi-theater where the documentaries are shown about the exhibition, I came across a lot at an auction of old army products. The benches were used in technical shelters like being seen on this picture.

IMG_2917

After we cleaned all the dust of the benches we placed them in the theater area of the exhibition.

IMG_2918

Around the benches on the walls of the theater, t-shirts that were found at the BIGA-group are placed. With these shirts the soldiers show of which unit they belong to and often have a kind of dark humor in them.

IMG-20220529-WA0012

The veterans who participated in the ReUniForm were also in Deelen. Ton was wearing his pants and his shirt and together with the information the stand showed, it showed that it was really a conversation starter.

IMG-20220529-WA0014

One of Ton his quotes was (freely translated): 'There are old veterans, there are young veterans, but they're all veterans.' He said this to connect all veterans instead of themselves comparing to each other. And this picture says it all to me.

Maakplaats

Hidden in between the greenery of the Veluwe, lays a airfield that once was build by the Germans during the second World War. Due to the green environment and style of building it looks up from the sky like a regular village and not close to barracks and an airfield. This made it a unique location of a extreme durable quality that the Dutch government decided to make a location belonging to the ministry of Defence. ~GerritVanFaassen

Gerrit van Faassen is a veteran who was technician in the army. After his duty he founds his joy in creating items out of old military stuff. And so he created these lamps that got a place in the exhibition.

IMG_3133

As I found this small army casket being sold in my neighbourhood, it immediately made me thing of Gerrit and I acquired the casket.

IMG_3106

The interior shows that the casket probably was part of a vehicle maintenance kit. As it contained a lot of replacement lamps.

IMG_3132kopie

As the lamps Gerrit van Faassen makes of the tripods to me look a bit like Lampie/Little Helper of Willie Wortel/Gary Gearloose and Gerrit being a bit like an inventor, I drew his figure on the inside.

IMG_3145

The inside of the casket after personifying it to Gerrit. The movie clipboard with 'LED there be Light' refers to a modern interpretation of the documentary about veteran-care after the second World War. One of the things was find creative joy and that's just what Gerrit does as well.

IMG_3178

As his lamps are being presented in the exhibition in the maakplaats of HVV, and he signs his creations with the Kilroy-sign I painted these on the exterior. Together with a fun way of caution.

951cc873-9451-4975-80a1-734d34484022

As I always collected saws as canvas to signpaint on I donated these to the maakplaats. Although not related to the army, saws are subconsciously related to craftmenship and thus to making.

IMG_3874

This board I found in a container and was waiting for the right opportunity, gave me a great canvas to paint a bigger version of the design I made for the patch.

Assen_MaakplaatsOverview_HelmenVolVerhalen_ReUniForm_Veteranen_Kazerne_Assen

During events the 'Maakplaats' was the open atelier of Pascal Griffioen, better known as DefP of the Dutch rap-formation Osdorp Posse. They were groundbreaking in the 90's and lots of younger veterans listened to them. In the front Peter is making podcasts, so lots of stories got collected besides the stories that are already in exhibition.

Johan Willem Friso Kazerne, Assen

The next stop for locating the exhibition would be on an active military terrain: The 'Johan Willem Friso-kazerne' in Assen. And that's where already the first hurdle started as on active military terrains civilians actually aren't welcome. As Deelen was only for a single day and Nijverdal being a civilian place we needed a work around with respect to this rule. Eventually we agreed that visitors would report themselves at the entrance and a volunteer would pick them up and guided them to the old cafeteria, as that was where now the exhibition was hosted.

So all we needed to do was a call-out for volunteers and despite we thought that we migh ended our self on the list, we had an amount of around twelve people that were enthousiastic to this veteran project. And most of them having an army background themselves as well it really showed their grattitude towards us.

Meanwhile in politics the municipality of Assen and district Drenthe were affraid that Assen maybe got shut, and there would be economically a lot on stake for this so called Garrison Town. So bringing the civilian inwards and show that the barracks are part of a bigger local economical spectrum was a smart move of Mayor Steeneker.

"Art and Veterans, it might for some be a strange combination but it works", he would later say about why he wanted to give Helmen Vol Verhalen a chance inside. Mayor of Assen Marco Out exclaimed once more how the barracks for some might feel as coming home, after their own journey dealing with consequences their profession asked from them. Chairman of Entrepeneurs Kor IJszenga didn't immediately want to look at the loss in economical aspect, but told that having the barracks close at home makes entrepreneurs aware that safety is a pillar on which business and economics in our society are build. And that they support telling these stories of all people wha were and are willing to give up a bit of their own freedom so we all benefit.

Concluding Assen felt for Helmen Vol Verhalen really as a first place you could call home. And as in Nijverdal the exposition was placed in museum we now actually created the museum ourselves with even our own giftshop.
To me personally it also happened to be my last trick up my sleeve for Helmen Vol Verhalen. As I became homeless and the project couldn't give me a stable income or sometimes not even an income at all I needed to suffer in silence. And decided to go to the homeless shelter on the fifth of may, when the exhibition opened in the Ministry of Defense in The Hague.

Steneker+Arts

Major in the army and responsible for Johan Willem Friso barracks is Peter Steneker sitting on the left. He reached out as he believed that sometimes something special is needed to force new grounds. Besides him, his colleague and spiritual counselor at the JWF-barracks Wiebe Arts, who made great use of the exhibition by including it into the curriculum.

The active mindset of most of our military educated volunteers, meant I only need to prepare the work and facilitate as needed. Than they would execute the work.

As we acquired some caskets in which we were able to transport and let it be a part of the exhibition as well, here they are painting it green so it camouflages itself a bit more within exhibition.

While we were landed with the exposition at Assen, we got a huge support of volunteers. The most beautiful thing of all was how they were in constant personal support of eachother. As many of them had a background in the army, it showed how the most of them were trained.

In the beginning the attendence build up slow, the volunteers liked to doing things together. It meant I prepared the work and facilitated and let them execute the work. Like here they are stenciling Helmen Voor Verhalen on wooden panels.

The wooden panels eventually were screwed onto the benches you're able to see in this picture in the background.

But like you'll able to see on this picture they always were the first responders when guests wandered through the exhibition.

The benches being quite prominent in the exhibition, we promoted support by giving the parties that sponsored us a face by signpainting their logo's on the benches.

MajoorSteneker_Speech_HelmenVolVerhalen_ReUniForm_Veteranen_Kazerne_Assen

"Helmen vol Verhalen shows that Veterans and Art is irregular combination. But this exhibition shows that it works and it has a future." were the words Peter Steneker, Major in the Army opened his speech with.

As the support of 'Ondernemend Assen', a assocation of entrepreneurs in Assen, was big, their chair was asked to give a speech at the opening as well.

~BurgemeesterMarcoOut

Major of Assen Marco Out referred in his speech to all the generations of young men and women who partly grew up at the barracks in Assen. Edo who was one of this generations and got sent to Srebrenica tells about the artwork that was based on his story to mayor Out.

LibanonVeteranen_.SharingStories_HelmenVolVerhalen_ReUniForm_Veteranen_Kazerne_Assen

This picture is symbolic for how art is about mutual feeling. Both veterans know the story and are meeting each other in front of this picture. Although they maybe didn't work directly together they get to share their story with someone that understands what they feel.

TonXMariaXJeZus_Gedenken_HelmenVolVerhalen_ReUniForm_Veteranen_Kazerne_Assen

In the weeks before Assen, old Veteran Ton Kelders died. We buried him in Loenen at the veteran cemetary after a crowdfund. As we wanted to honour and remember him we made this small altar. The flag in the background we got out of an depot at the National Military Museum, and purely coincedental it is the center part of the weapon of Drenthe.

411b5f1e-4c0d-46cd-b6b8-af0d74e67cdf

One of the pictures of the opening. To me it really represented how a veteran and an artist both look into the light behind the story they carry. Although the veteran wasn't in the exhibition as veteran he was as volunteer and he felt that those stories were also part of the conflicting feelings he had after his obligatory military service. And them going into conversation with each other about life is what we hoped to facilitate with Helmen Vol Verhalen and ReUniForm.

ReuniformClass

A big part of the guests of the exhibitions in Assen, were schoolchildren. It was great to see our veterans opening up to them and see children asking the direct questions and reactions of what they saw. Here volunteer and Veteran Gerard shows the ReUniForm stand.

In Assen the Toko was also used as a bar area. Here you see the bar-tender of defense-catering Paresto. Painted signs I had are used to give it some styling.

StSDef_ProvDr_HVV_15

The Ministry of Defence wants to economize, so the future of the Johan Willem Friso barracks was unsure. It meant that different politicians came to visit the barracks and Helmen vol Verhalen was in that sense an inspiration to show how working together with civilian society could look like.

The Royal Commisioner of the province of Drenthe Klijnsma and State Secretary Van der Maat are listening with great attention on how one of the voluntarily supposts explains what they're able to see in the painting.

While everyone wanders through the exhibition it's Steneker who watches everyones back. It's almost symbolic for how they are trained.

Also Major of Assen is part of the group that needs to convince the politics to let the barracks stay. As it also has a great influence on economics around this area it is a vital part of this garrison city.

In the last weeks of the exhibition in Assen we got a request if it was able to host a medal presentation. As Michael Pots stopped his carreer at Defence he gets honoured with a medal.

Assen_MedailleUitreiking_MichelPots37

As Michael Pots always worked in the mllitary he is very grateful to his family and the support he had from his wife. As he said himself: "There wouldn't be so many soldiers today, if they not were supported at home. And it's now time to pay back the support I alway felt and had."

As receiver of the Willemsorde, heighest possible receivement in the Dutch army, Marco Kroon is given the honors to give Michael a speech and his medal

Besides the Medal presentation Michael also was asked to reveal 'Bartje', which is a real icon of Drenthe. This one was sawn with a chainsaw by Jelmer Zwaan.

After everything that was officially part of the medal ceremony, Army-caterer Paresto provided a lunch for all attendees.

Sideprogram VetXAssen

With the city center right next door a theater at the barracks, support of the local association of entrepreneurs and a creative team, it gave the opportunity to undertake different side programs to promote Helmen vol Verhalen. Amy (van Son) having experience with TedTalks soon the idea arrived for a veteran-abbreviation on it: VetX.
This meant that we need to look at speakers of whom wanted to tell something for a bigger public and help by telling their story they could inspire others to do so as well. As I had the graphic experience I was able to design the small promotion stuff of a fraction of the costs it normally would be. Eventually it became a great night on which almost everyone who was involved in the project came to listen and share. Unfortunately I wasn't able to visit due sickness but the pictures speak enough.

Sideprogram Jelmer Zwaan zaagt Bartje

WIth the winter- and the Christmasdays coming and the local Association of Entrepeneurs organising a iceskating area in the city center, we were asked if the exhibition was promoted as well. With a database of artists it would be stupid to not take the opportunity. As it was in the middle of the citycenter we figured that something loud an noisy could grab the attention of the public.
Thus we asked Jelmer Zwaan who works with a chainsaw as tool to be part of the program by working out his art publically. As Jelmer doesn't have any stage fright when making his art he was happy to be of service and suggested to saw Drenthe's icon: 'Bartje'.

Due to the noise and the supposts promoting the exhibition we had pretty much attention. Also all prominent members like Mayor of Assen Marco Out and State Secretary Jetta Klijnsma came to visit and taking a look at the art Jelmer is creating.

~DesigtTableStand

While developing the program, the tablestand was developed. With organising this we hoped to give the public a more in depth view of the proces a veteran goes through.

Rick van der Rest writes poetry and made a poem about losing someone. In this case its about old Veteran Ton Kelders. As he was always around, he died of lungcancer and despite knowing he was sick he suddenly was missed in the ReUniform team.

At the end of the program the suppost were thanked in fron of the crow for their voluntary work in the past months. Due to their enthousiasm and commitment for the exhibition we really felt welcomed in Assen.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_034

Jelmer Zwaan starts in Assens city center with a tree trunk and his tool of choice; a chainsaw.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_049

Due to the noise Jelmer attracts customers and as they see what he´s doing they most of the time stand still for a moment.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_054

Although in the middle of januari it is cold outside, at least sometimed the sun peeks through to shine its light on the project.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_057

And as the sun arises, Bartje arises out of the tree trunk as well.,,

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_089

The local people of Gemeente Assen are impressed with how controlled Jelmer uses his tool the model Bartje.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_094

With the iceskating area looking out on Jelmer, often children keep looking at what's happening.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_098

As the cold and the work costs energy and Bartje complained about cold ears, sometimes a little break was needed. Wandering through the shopping area you heard the people started talk about the project, which also means benefit for the entrepreneurs of Assen.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_100

As the toppart is quite good developed Jelmer starts to precisely model the lower part of Bartje.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_105

Royal Commissionair Jetta Klijnsma is cycling through Assen and stops when she hears the noise. Eventually the province of Drenthe chooses to support us greatly for our commitment. It shows Drenthe and Assen, have green heart.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_126

The Mayor of Assen Marco Out isn't that surprised that we are the one making the noise as Helmen Vol Verhalen renewed the energy of the importance of the barracks for district Assen.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_164

Gerard immediately adopts Bartje into the group of Veterans. That most of the supposts are veterans and they get attention with these kind of side-programs shows is really makes always that I feel fulfilled at the end of the day.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_167

As the biggest part is finished we choose to call it a day. A part of the team are just able to pose with him before the sun goes down.

HVV_JelmerZwaan_zaagt Bartje_179

Eventually the municipality of Assen chooses to reward us with a paycheck so we can cover the costs. The biggest reason is that we were on te forefront with showing how a the barracks can be used in society.

Merchandising Helmen Vol Verhalen

The last few years the Dutch government economised a lot on culture. The excuse, to let the free market do its work as people would pay for it if they like the exhibition, is an easy way of thinking. Because this means that society focussed projects like Helmen vol Verhalen, which focusses on the difficult subjects of life and our society need to be self-reliant. Or need to ask a lot of different parties to support the project which costs a lot of time and communication. It means that all ways to probably get support need to be mined. Because in todays zeitgeist that mainly focusses on sharing the happy times in life on social media, its hard to come with such kind of hard message.

To get some support for the project and let it be able to travel across the country the question to me, as I had the most experience in product development, was to generate income by selling some merchandise. As I saw it as an opportunity to get some small success and help to the project further I aggreed and developed quite a broad range of projects that

could be sold in the so called ‘Toko’, which is a reference to a small store on board of a marine-ship or at the army-base.
If I look back on it my learning point on this was not the development of the product, but more on aftercare. Because the products that were bought to be sold and pay the people working on the projects eventually became giva-aways and not paying the people anymore who were working for the project. In that sense it made that people making the hours to help the project develop, suddenly need to become voluntarily hours as else it wasn’t possible to pay them. While upfront there was agreement of paying the normal rate. It made for me that I couldn’t continue. And that I needed to stop putting the hours into a project, which we already spent many volunteer hours on because of its purpose, because of an economical conflict. But as I am proud of my support and on the products I developed I still share them as it definitely was of a professional level. And eventually I paid the price for it.
